Used as a gentle chemical exfoliant and antiseptic for acne-prone skin. Ethyl lactate in lotions (10%) has been shown to help unclog pores and reduce acne lesions. It lowers skin pH slightly (from lactic acid release) and the ethanol by-product has antimicrobial effects. Clinical comparisons found topical ethyl lactate can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide for mild acne, with good tolerability. It thus helps to smooth skin texture and reduce breakouts.
