Formaldehyde (and releasers)

A potent germicidal agent historically used in cosmetics (e.g. nail hardeners) and released in small amounts by some preservatives (like quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea).

Category/Notes

Preservative, antimicrobial (with safety concern)

Benefits

Prevents microbial growth in products, protecting the user from infections due to contaminated products. However, formaldehyde is a known skin irritant and a suspected carcinogen; even at low levels it can cause allergic reactions. Its benefit is effective preservation, but due to safety concerns its direct use is largely restricted or replaced by safer preservatives.
